Soft Pedal?
Brake Fade?
Brake Mods

Banzai run down Decker Canyon late on Sunday night and the pedal gets softer and softer, gotta slow down because the brakes are not working properly. Stop at Pacific Coast Highway and see smoke reflected at the front fender by the light of a passing car. And wow, what is that smell? I get out to look and my brake pads are glowing like charcoal briquettes with ugly gray smoke curling into the air. Could this be brake fade?

Aside from just over using the brakes, fade is caused by gas coming off the pads. SPD Tuning Service sells Mintex pads that have been "gassed off" prior to sale. Baked in an autoclave, most if the fade causing gases are burnt off leaving a pad material with remarkable properties. They use a special pad mixture (thank you, NASA) of friction material that works as a street pad, but can retain its friction when much hotter than standard pads. They are not fade proof, just very fade resistant, and will take you much longer into a Banzai run before giving up. When used prudently, they retain good stopping power during periods of repeated use, such as descending the 23 switch backs on Decker Canyon Road.

The only solution after 1155 Mintex compound is not racing pads - they do not stop when cold, but bigger brakes! Racing compounds are for the track only because when cold, they do not stop until about the third hard stop, when you have some heat in them. In some cases that is two stops too late. See the Products, Brakes section please.
