Subaru                  Subaru
298mm 4-pot front brakes   and   248mm rear unit for 16"+ wheels.

Subaru's 15" series disk brakes are generally very good, in fact superior to most cars in its class. These are the10.9" or 10.7" disks in front w/dual piston calipers and 10.4" rear disks. You increase their performance more by changing the pads, suspension bushings and using sticky high performance tires than any modification to the brakes themselves. SPD Tuning Service sells large brake kits, but the are honestly only needed for those cars being run hard in the mountains. How ever, they look fantastic!

Level one: Replacement Pads

The 2.5RS has good brakes. Level one is installing high performance Mintx 1155 "fast road" pads. The Mintex 1155 compound road pad has superior fade resistance, yet performs when cold, unlike true racing pads, which are dangerous on the street due to their poor cool temperature friction properties.

Level two: Subaru OEM 15" Brakes

Owners of non-RS or non-Legacy GT/Outback cars benefit by changing to the 15" series front and rear disk brakes. SPD Tuning Service sell front calipers and rotors new. Rear disk conversion units are best obtained from a local salvage yard. This method is most satisfactory and far easier than buying new, individual parts. See the Brake FAQ for details.

Level three: Brake booster swap out

Oddly, the Subaru has a very soft brake peddle, making smooth transition from braking to acceleration difficult for many drivers. SPD offers a kit that makes a harder brake pedal. Please see the Technical Information sections for detials.

Level four: Subaru, Prodrive and Brembo 4-Pot brake kits.

Rotor diameter is brake power.  All but the Subaru kit require the Speedline 17" wheels to clear the large rotor and wide 4-pot caliper. The Subaru kit requires 2.5RS (WRX-RA STI) 16" wheels. There are roads, especially dropping down out of mountain passes, that will overheat standard brakes. These large rotor kits greatly increase stopping power and effectively delay the onset of fade. The effect of these kits are especially are noticed in higher speed braking.

Key Benefits

Bring a standard Impreza up to WRX brake standards.
Add fade resistance with special compound Mintex pads.
Add more stopping power with a 4-pot kit.
Improve chassis dynamics with hard bushing kit
Single diaphragm booster kit for harder pedal feel..
